SLAUGHTERMEN'S STRIKE.
THE PETONE EPISODE. By Telegraph—Press Association. / Wellingon, Last Night. Questioned to-day regarding the Gear Company's action in discharging slaughtermen on Saturday on the ground that they were not doing sufficient work —killing only six sheep an hour, while- - able to do twelve—Mr. M. J. Eeardoo (secretary of the Slaughtermen's Federation) said that the company's action .would only make the men more decided in adhering to their demands. The Federation had a good insight into the ■ working of "free" labourers, and was better pleased than ever. at the new position. The Gear Company's action would only tend to put the men's teeth on edge. Mr. Reardon added that the Canterbury slaughtermen had abandoned the idea of accepting 27s 6d per huh" dred.
