A HEARTLESS ROGUE.
CARUSO'S EX-CHAUFFEUR. Caruso's ex-chauffeur, Cesare Romati, who some time ago eloped from Florence to the French Riviera with a lady friend of his master, the well-known opera, star.. Ada fliachctti, in his master's motor car, and who was recently condemned at Milan to 10 months' imprisonment as the organiser of a perjury plot against the great tenor, was again arrested on December 27 on a serious charge. While out on bail pending his appeal. Romati made the acquaintance of a young lady of good family at Gallarate. After a promise of marriage, he persuaded her to sell some property for the purpose of financing a school of aviation for the upper classes, which, he said, he was. commissioned to organise. No sooner had the money been obtained tluui Romati prevailed upon the girl to. leave her home and run away with him to Varese, where, till shortly before Christmas, they stayed at her expense.' Romati, according to the young lady's statement, then excused himself, saying he must spend the Christmas season with his family at Brescia. When, however, some days elapsed without any tidings of him, and she discovered that on leaving her he had taken £IOO from her cash box, she came to Milan and gave information to the police. Romati, when arrested, was apparently in hiding at Varese, only a few streets from where he had abandoned the girl. He was later brought to Milan Prison in irons.—Milan correspondent of the Daily Chronicle.
