DISTRICT NEWS

MOKAU. (From Our Own Correspondent). The 'contractors (Messrs. Coleman and Sons) for the post office at Awakino are making pood progress with its erection. The whole of the outside work is completed, and the men are now engaged in finishing off the inside work, and everything is well on the way to completion. The residents are already moving in endeavouring to have some of ° the Cabinet Ministers present at the opening. The date has not been fixed yet. The _ Roads Department has two -gangs repairing the road between Mokau and Awakino, and teams have already started carting metal on to the Awakino end, and a gang of men are at present engaged blasting limestone for metalling the Mokau end. Given another montii of fine weather this road will be in good order for the coming winter. While the Roads Department is on the job. it is to be hoped that they will not overlook the large sand drift on the south side of the Mokau River nr the long steep sandy hill on the north side of the river, both of which have caused a lot of trouble to the motor car drivers passing through Mokau. Mr. Tiffin, who lately purchased TT. Lewis' block of country on the Mokau River, is at present in Mokau, making arrangements for sowing this block. I understand a large gang of men are toi start sowing this coming week. Mr. Tiffin is to be congratulated on his purchase, as now that this block is felled and burned, it can be seen that Mr. Tiffin has some of the finest land on the Mokau River. Mr. Davis. Public Works Inspector, visited Awakino on the Bth inst.. in connection with the new post office, and on the 9th Sunday, accompanied Mr. Coleman, the contractor and his men for a trip up the river to the coal mines in Victor Syolund's launch and spent a very pleasant day. Mr. Sinstead, Inspector of■ Machinery, of Wanganui. is at present in the district inspecting the boilers of the engines at the different factories.
