FIRE AT A PICTURE SHOW. Hy Cable Association—Copyright. Sydney, February 15. At the inquiry into the fire at the Crystal Palace Picture Theatre on December 31, the coroner remarked that there seemed a suggestion of foul play, but he was unable to say whether it was Iso or not. Certainly there was no evij dence of foul play. The verdict was that the evidence did not show whether the fire was accidental or not.
A BRUTAL HUSBAND. Melbourne, February 15, The Chief Justice, sitting in the divorce court, in commenting on the case of a man charged with brutally ill-treat-ing and deserting his wife, said it was not very difficult to conceive of such treatment if the, man was an orang-tang, in which ease he would be shot. Power should be given to award imprisonment and the lash in such cases.
A YOUTHFUL TITTER Melbourne, February 10. The bag of jewellery which was curried off by a youth to whom it ha<l been handed to hold by a commercial traveller at Bfillarat has been recovered in an outhouse. The youth who stole it directed the police to the place. He received a sentence of four months' imprisonment. AX UNEXPLAINED CASE. Sydney, February 10. Caldwell, a «irl of 21, and Wright, a steward, who were found shot, are too ill to give an account of themselves.
