A number of freezers, who had abstained from work in symI pa thy with the butchers, have gone back, 1 and labor circles recognise that the slaughtermen have been beaten. I 1 THE GEAR COMPANY RESUMES. Wellington, Tuesday. Operations were,resumed at the Gear Company's works at Petone this morning. Forty butchers were employed, and J up to lunch-time they had put through -KM sheep. The local companies report that they are being inundated with applications from men. - They are. giving preference to those with experience. THE HASTINGS WORKS. r Hastings, Last Night. > The work of the new butchers at the I local freezing works continues to imy /prove, and some very good tallies are ' being recorded. Thirteen butchers were t on the boards at Pakipaki yesterday The highest tally was 54. Sixteen meii were slaughtering to-day. Eleven hundred and seventy-five sheep were put I through at Tomoana yesterday.' The situation in regard to the strike was discussed at a meeting of the Hawke's Bay Sheep-owners' Union this afternoon. The meeting was not open to the press, but at the conclusion the secretary stated that the following resolutions had been unanimously passed: That this meeting of sheep-owners approves of the l ' stand taken by the freezing companies "■ iu regard to the strike of the slaughtcr- ;' men, and proposes to support the a companies to their utmost in the event of their active support being required, POSITiON AT WAITARA. From enquiries made by a News reporter at Waitara yesterday it was gathered that there are no new developments at Messrs. Borthwick & Sons' works. Work is proceeding quietly, and the eight men who are manning the boards are giving every satisfaction. | FELT.MONGERS UNSYMPATHETIC. Timaru. The local Fellmongers' Union have decided' to handle pelts, irrespective of how the killing boards are manned.
