BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Borough Council met last uiglit, • the Mayor (Mr. <J. W. Browne) presiding. (Kher mem hers present were: Crs. . H. Gilbert, .7. C Morey. .1. T. Mannix. .j. : E. Wilson. J. Clarke, 11. Stoeker, W. Anibury. T. L. Buxton. J. Buttimore. F. 1 Jackson, J. Kibbv. CAB FARES. Five cab proprietors petitioned the [ Council to revise the scale of cab charges so as to read as follows:—"To be paid , by each passenger for the first mile or part of a mile, Is; for every half-mile or part of a half-mile beyond the first mile, each adult passenger (id. In nil cases where a ea:riage is engaged and the hirer does not return, a charge of lid per mile shall be paid for the return journey to the nearest call stand."—The petition was referred to the By-laws Committee. MOTI'ROA WATER MAIN". Mr. E. Grillilhs. managing director of die Taranaki Oil Lands Acquisition and Development, Company, wrote to the effect that his company would be willing to make some contribution, say £5, towards the cost of laying the water main io Moturoa. if by so doing it would result in the main being tapped bv March -I. -It was decided to inform Mr. Griffi(lis that the necessary speeding-up of i.lie work would involve an extra cost ot 125. and would be undertaken if the company agreed to pay this sum. Under ordinary conditions the main would reach the works bv March 10. TO RE-GRADF DEVON STREET WEST. On the motion of Cr. Mannix the engineer was instructed to report on the advisiibleness and cost of re grading Devon street we>t. at its junction with Morlev street. IIKAVY TRAFFIC. The question of taxing traction engine trallic within the borough was re terrcd to the Tiv-laws Committee. GENERAL. The whole of the various monthly reports were adopted without amendments. On the motion of Cr. Gilbert die permanent bands were granted a half-holi-day on the second day of die autumn show.
