RIFLE SHOOTING.
TAUAXAIvI MEETIXC. SECOND DAY'S INSULTS. WINSLADE TJJE CHAMPION. AN EXCITING CONTEST. The concluding stages of the grand aggregate match for the championship rille shot of Taranaki proved very exciting. As usual, the long ranges proved the downfall of many of the leaders in the early stages. The 800 and 1)00 yards ranges of the J.'atea match saw very little alteration among file leaders. Driimmond, llollard and Evans all scored 07. Roots went down a few points, and so did Winslade and Johnson. Humphries, with (iS, and Speck 00, including a possible each, improved their positions. The 1000 yds. proved disastrous to llollard, Druniniond and Evans, who could only score 17 and IS respectively, and Winslade, wilh 31, stepped into the lead. Humphries (28) was second, live points behind, with Roots close up. In the final ten .shots at 1000 yds.. Winslade put on 4-!. Humphries followed with live bulls in succession, then an inner and four more hulls, making 4!l and tieing. In the slioot-oll', Winslade won somewhat easily, putting up the line score of 24 out of 2."). Sergesmt-Major Jiond headed the tyro list. The Patea Match was won by Crover. with 07, after lie bad protested against incorrect marking, which would have robbed him of a hullseye. Shooting was very erratic, due to tlie bad light and the wind, which was tricky at times. Challenges were numerous; in fact the Association profited to the extent of .10 from this source of revenue. The arrangements were again , up to date, Lient.-Col. Okey and Lieuts. Messenger and Humphrey having charge ■ of the range, whilst Sergeant-Major Armitage was in charge of the trenches and iiad a busy time, the telephone ring-
ing continuously. Tlie refreshments were iitriiin in Hit' hands (jf Sergeant Southam and his brother, and Mcsdames W. iirucc and Winsladc and 'Miss Winsladc assisted at tlie busy times. Visiting shootists were unanimous in llieir praise of the catering. The secretary. Mr. T. King, had liis end working like clockwork, lie was courteous to all enquiries and very prompt in gelling out the prize lists, being ably assisted by Miss King. The results of the shooting were:— TEAMS MATCH, open to team of live men from any Territorial Company or Defence Rille Club; seven shots at each of 301), 500 and UOO yards. First prize £5 and Tisch Memorial Cup; .second prize, £3; third prize, £1 ss. In this match Kapongn, who were leading by three points at the two longer ranges, scored 155 points, and managed to retain their lead, annexing tlie cup. The New Plymouth Rille Club's iirst team scored 156, and advanced from third to second place, ousting the Patea Club, who only compiled 151 at the short range. Detailed scores: —
