DISTRICT NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondents) EGMOXT VILLAGE.

It is with regret I have to announce the death of Mrs. R. Burrows, which occurred on Thursday last after a painful illness. Her husband is left with the care of live young children. The funeral was largely attended, the deceased being much respected by all who knew her. The annual Sunday School treat, held a week or so ago, was not favored with the best weather conditions. Nevertheless, the children had a good afternoon's amusement. In the evening a good crowd attended the concert, which was presided over by the Rev. Houchen in his usual jovial style. The children's prizes were a fine collection, reflecting great credit on Mesdames Olson and Matthews (teachers), who selected them. The programme was as follows:—Overture, Mr. Geo. March (violin), G. H. Marsh (mandolin) and Miss Mary Marsh (piano); song, Mr. Rundle; songs (2), Mr. Feiiton; song. Mr. F. Price; songs (2). Mr. Chong; vocal quartette, Messrs Price and Fenton and Mrs Yeates and Miss A. Price; song, Mr. Penwarden; instrumental trio, Mr. Geo. Marsh and family; speech. Rev. Houchen; piano duet,' Mrs. R. G. Marsh and Miss M. Lile. A dance followed and was very much enjoyed by the people, as during the last i six months the Village has been dead, as ; far as entertainments are concerned.

The bloom of the ragwort is very noticeable about here just at present. How is it that some unfortunate farmers who are doing their best to keep down the weeds are the very ones who are worried, while those persons whose farms are covered with blackberry, ragwort, daisv. etc. are allowed to remain undisturbed?

On Saturday night Mr. Mat. Martin's house on Upland road was destroyed by fire, caused by the accidental upsetting of a kerosene lamp. I understand that verv little was saved.

WAREA. The weather during the past week has been very warm after the cyclone •n Monday evening. The milk supply at the local cheese waetory is now going down very fast. A farewell social was tendered to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Pelliam on Wednesday evening. The night was a glorious one. and one of the largest crowds ever assembled in the hall was present. The music was supplied gratis by the Ducker family. During the evening a presentation, consisting of a silver hot-water kettle, on a stand, with spirit lamp, and a silver teapot, was made to Mr. and Mrs. T'elham by the residents of the district, which Mr. Velham suitably acknowledged.

The lion. Dr. Bomarc, M.P. for the Western Maori district, visited Buniho on Sunday, where there was a large meeting of natives. A meeting of the local Athletic Club was held on Tuesday evening, about 10 members being present. Mr. A. E. Magon presided. An application is to be made to the Warea Domain Board for certain improvements to the grounds, viz., grubbing the furze on the running track, flooring the office, and repairing the fence around the enclosure of the clumping block. The committee was of opinion that a shed of some description should be built for the purpose of a refreshment booth, etc.

The nominations received for the chopping events at the approaching sports amount to about seventy. This is a record for the club. For sawing events there are IS nominations. Mr. R. Julian's tender for blocks was accepted. A block committee was appointed, consisting of Messrs W. IT. Julian, O. E. Julian. A. Jackush. C. S. Muir and M. TTill: ball committee. Messrs B. Warner, K.
