ENTERTAINMENTS.
WIRTITS' CTRCFS. "•ie turning of the clock and the passin of the months have again brought c !i them a perennial source of joy and ;• iiiisenient to the old as well as to the young, in the circus, with its sawdust and spangles, its staid old horses and gay young equestriennes, and its jokes that never grow old. There is a very strong similarity between one circus and another, hut their visits are so rare anil their atmosphere so strange that the visitor usually goes in a state of expectancy, and leaves with a strong sense of satisfaction tinged with regret that the days of his youth are gone. Messrs Wirth have always striven to introduce something out of the ordinary, and this year have again succeeded in their efforts to present somrlhing entirely new and wonderful, and the very full programme with which they will open their season in New Plymouth on Wednesday. February 12. is well up to the high standard set by the firm. The circus opens with a grand parade which provides a fine spectacular treat, as it introduces the whole of their large company of over 300 performers, besides the lingo herd 1 of elephants, camels, buffalo, horses and wild beasts. The turn, however, which | causes the most wonderment is that pre- | seated by Hillary Long, the "up-side down phenomenon." There is a very full menagerie with the circus. The gem of the collection is a troupe of white polar bears and grizzly bears. The perform- [ ance is brought to a conclusion by an i exhibition of r ugh and trick riding, I and lassoo throwing by a band of AmeriI can cowboys and Australian rough riders. The menagerie also includes a number of fine elephants and will open from 4 to 5 in the afternoon.
