ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
DEATH OF A CONSTABLE. Per Press Association. Palmerston North, Wednesday. Constable Doyle, who was admitted to the Palmerston Hospital ■on Monday, suffering from a broken leg and facial abrasions, the result of an assault made upon him at Shannon last ' Saturday, died at 5.30 this morning. Deceased was not altogether a strong man, and had been on sick leave for a time last September. His age was about 35 years, and he leaves a widow ( and children, who reside in-Auckland. A man named McDonald was arrested on I Monday and remanded yesterday for a j week. A LIFT ACCIDENT. Wellington, Wednesday. A fatal accident occurred at Messrs. E. W. Mills & Co.'s machinery store in , Victoria street this morning, the victim I being a married man named James Hanratty, an employee of the firm for over twenty years. Deceased was waiting on the goods lift, which is operated by electricity. The lift, on which there were several barrels of cement, moved upwards without any warning to Han- , ratty, who was caught between its outer edge and the brick-work near the bottom of the wajl. lie was dreadfully injured about the stomach and abdomen, anil died in a few seconds. Considerable difficulty was experienced in releasing, the body. Deceased was about forty years of age. FATAL STONE-THROWI N(3. Dunedin, Last Night. At the inquest on the body of Cecil Robert Randall, who died from hemorrhage of the brain on Tuesday morning, the evidence showed that deceased and a cousin named Duncan MeGillvray, aged 14 years, were playing on Sunday. -MeGillvray threw a stone at a fowl and hit deceased by mistake. Deceased became ill next morning, and when the doctor was called was unconscious. An operation was performed as soon as possible, but the lad never regained consciousness.
