The .Southland Times states that Mrs. Lindsay, of Waianiwa, is the only lady in the Dominion who conducts a dairy factory, from which she turns out 25 tons of cheese a season—and cheese, too, that ranks high for quality.

A Chrislchurch collector of coins was fortunate enough to secure a "lion shilling," a • somewhat rare coin issued in the reign of George I\ r . This particular coin that come into his possession was dated 1820. The peculiarity of the 'lion shilling" is that it has on it a lion over the crown, and the rose, shamrock and thistle below the crown.

There will, as usual, be a vigorous frish National Concert in the Theatre Royal on March IT -which singularly enough happens by some strange circumstance of Fate to coincide with St. Patrick's Day. The promoters of the. concert, promise to give an even more excellent programme than that which was such a pronounced success last year.

The usefulness of the cinematograph was strikingly illustrated at the Empire Theatre hist evening, when the public in this far away land was afforded a close view of the beautiful Dardanelles. The boat life on this historic sea. the magnificent mosques and buildings on its banks, the beautiful Eastern scenery, was all clearly shown, together with striking pictures of the Turkish soldiers marching in the streets of Constantinople bound for the scene of war. Tt is a striking picture, and the only regret is that it is not longer. The Timaru Post learns that Mr. Craigie, M.P., is offering a generous gift to the citizens of Timaru. It is a very 1 handsome Carrara marble statue of Robert Burns standing oft high on a pedestal of Coromandel granite also six feet high, surmounting a Timaru Milestone base. It is proposed to erect the statue, which will be shipped from Naples next mouth. Mr. Craigie's -gifts to the town during his ten years' tendency of the mayoralty and since, include a fine avenue of trees, valuable gifts for the Art Gallery, and chimes for the new Post Office clock.

Applications for enrolment in the day classes at the New Plymouth Technical College, which will re-open on March M, are coming in very satisfactorily, ar.rt it is evident that the confidence shown i»y the Education Board in inaugurating these classes is going to be fully justified. The director (Mr. A. Gray) expects to start the year with considerably more pupils than those in attendance last year. A mechanical and electrical engineering course will absorb a good many boys, and the director nouhl be pleased if intending pupils enrolled as soon as possible, as it is anticipated that in view of the increased numbers application will have to be made to the Department for additional apparatus. The first of the Empire films taken in Taranaki and forwarded to England for publication will be shown at the Empire Theatre on Saturday next in the shape of "Modern Methods of Cheesemaking in Taranaki, New Zealand." It embraces a comprehensive view of Mount Egmont and the surrounding country, shows the large herds of cattle employed in the dairy industry, and depicts in detail all the modern methods of cheesemaking. Mr. Saunders has also received advice that two other films taken from the Mount Egmont and Recreation Grounds negatives are being screened during the present month and are already being eagerly booked by the English showmen.
