SCHOONER IN TROUBLE.
TOWKD INTO LYTTELTOX. By Telegraph—Press Association. Cliristchurch, Last Night. Shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday a message was received from the signalman at Adderiey Head, l.ylteKon, to the effect that the Kaiaipoi Shipping Company's Kairaki. bound from Napier to Kaiapoi with shoe)), had a small schooner in tow. Two hours later tlie Kairaki arrived in the stream, and it was ascertained that the vessel in tow was the auxiliary schooner Fairburn. a wellknown trader between Auckland, Napier, find Tinvaru. At 4 p.m. the schooner was brought inside the moles and berthed at: the (lladstono pier. Seen on arrival her master (Captain Thomson) stated that the vessel sailed from Tiniaru on Saturday last with a full cargo of produce for Wairoa. Oil Tuesday last, when abreast of Akuroa. the vessel rail into a strong northerly gale, and sought shelter in Akaroa. The following day the vessel proceeded on her voyage, heavy weather being encountered. At 4 a.m. on Friday, when in Cook's Strait, tlie Fairburn was struck by a lieaw nor'wost gale, which blew her foresail away and also broke her rudder fastening. When the gale subsided efforts were made to rig a jurv rudder, b"t whilst, tlie operations were being oaryiod on the vessel drifted well out to sea. Subsequently the engines, were set sning ami an effort was luade/'to trot back to land, but owinir to the strong wind and oil running short Captain Thomson deemed, it advisable to. seek help. When about three miles oast, of Cane Campbell, at. 7 o'clock last evening, the Kairaki was signalled and the vessel wai; taken in tow to Lvttelton. Fairlv hoavv weather was experienced on the run down the const.. Tlie vessel win | tn phiped on t.hr* patent slio on Wednesday next, when repairs will be effected to her rudder and an examination will be made of her nropollors. She will probably resume her voyage about the end of next week. The Fairburn is an auxiliary sehooner of SO tons. She has two engines of 30 h.p. each, driving a separate "screw. The owners are Messrs. Carabv and Co.. Napier.
