PETROLEUM,

GOOD INDICATIONS AT BELL BLOCK. Yesterday morning we reported that "as had been met with at No. 1 bore, Bell Block, at 1200 and 1230 feet. Further information to hand is even of a more gratifying nature. The'bore was carried down a further 50 feet on Thursday, and a much "stronger gas vein penetrated at I.'WO feet in good foundation. The flame emitted from the gas was very similar to that from No. 5 at MoioTiia. Of course, it is early yet to expect anything but gas indications, but no doubt the next few hundred feet will be closely watched with a view of furproving the extent of the oil field outside the Moturoa area. The management at No. 2, Bell Block, were prompted to watch closely for gas indications, although this bore is only down about 700 feet. The usual precautionary measures were adopted, but one of the drillers was unfortunate enough to get badly singed, and is at present carrying a mark upon his head which proves that gas does exist at No. 1 bore in a very live manner. Fortunately he escaped by being badly singed. The formation at both bores is good.
