EMPIRE Pk/TI.TvES. The star item in the new programme which opened in the Empire Picture Palace last night was a superb dramatic picture entitled, "The Power of Love," one of the mosi touching films yet screened at the Theatre. The first film, dealing exclusively with the Balkan' War, was screened, amidst great enthusiasm. The ''Harvest of Sin," was a drama with a very strong moral. A bank clerk gambles beyond his mean-*, and with the aid of a so-called friend determines to rob the bank. Accompanied by a bank messenger he sets out to collect some accounts. They are suddenly assaulted in a narrow lane, and the messenger is seriously injured. To clear himself from blame (for the robbery had been planned beforehand) he determines to place the odium of the act upon another clerk who is engaged to the mimager's daughter. The innocent man is arrested, but the detective sees the look of satisfaction on the guilty man's face and his suspicions are uro'used, and he shadows the man to a low den where he meets his confederates for the purpose of dividing the spoil. They quarrel and the clerk is fatally wounded, but before he dies he confesses to being the guilty man. An Edison comedy. "Holding the Fort," was also screened. A young couple while on their honevmoon went to a hotel for the purpose of booking a room, but owing to the rush of business their room is also engaged by .mistake to a masculine looking lady. The bridegroom arrives and puts his luggage in (lie room, and then'goes out to await (he arrival of the bride. On their return they find that a, stranger had taken possession of their room, and 'had bundled lie husband's luggage outside. An argument was at once commenced, but the stranger stood firm, but after many amusing incidents she gave the room up to the voung couple. Arabian Trade* and Industries and the Building of the Elephant Butte Dam in New Mexico were very interesting as well as instructive. Gaumont's Graphic contained a number of interesting items, and these with other films, made a, most excellent programme. THEATRE ROYAL PICTURES. Something to please all tastes is included in to-night's change of programme at the Then Ire Royal. Featured in the series will be a brilliant quartette of dramatic studies, in the shape of "The Girl's Br.iverv" (a sterling Lubin presentation!. "The Father" (an A.B. special). "A Moonshiner's Daughter" (a powerfully-east Western storv),' and a magnificent Kalem film, "Further Adventures of Die Girl Spy." In "Bethlehem and Palestine." a travel film of more than ordinary interest will be shown, while "Bohemian Life and. Customs" and "Glimpses of Italian Lakes" will also merit attention. Several comedy hits ;ire also promised.
