CORRESPONDENCE.

THE WATER SUPPLY. To the Editor. Sir,—When my attention was drawn to a "local" in your issue of the 22nd inst., mentioning my name in connection -with a weir across the Waiwakaiho river, which you alleged I .'strongly recommended some years ago, with a view of augmenting the water supply," I immediately telephoned to you and stated that I had recommended a weir, but not in the position now being discussed. To avoid any future misunderstanding, may I reiterate that I never yet said one word recommending a weir to be placed near or below the present intake, but in a position some 25 chains, more or less, up the river. I forget the exact distance, but the plans and my report were left in the borough offices when I had to relinquish the position of borough engineer. The scheme I then proposed, after months of careful thought, observation, computation and trial surveys, is, i in my opinion, what will eventually have ' to be carried out. as neither the weir, nor the enlargement of the contraction at the Mangamahoe stream, will give anything like the volume of water required at the pipe head when New Plymouth assumes the proportions that all sanguine people anticipate. Other important side issues will come up later on.—l am, etc., A. H. KENDALL.
