SLAUGHTERMEN'S STRIKE.
ONE COMPANY CAPITULATIXG. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Xight. Both parties to the dispute in the meat export trade, since the men broke away from the boards, have insisted on their solidarity of purpose. In reply to the men's demands for 30s per 100 and etceteras, the companies said 27* Gil and no more. Since Friday there have been developments of a nature that seem to make the situation much more involved. There is every propect of the Wellington fanners' Meat Company breaking away from the other companies, and beginning work at the new rates and under the new conditions next Thursday, January 30, a day before the notice to cease work expires. This much is reported to be fact: That negotiations are now proceeding between the Slaughtermen's Union and the Wellington Farmers' Meat Company at Wa'ingawa. Messrs. J. Bishop 'and M. .). Reardon are representing the men tentatively. The provisions of the agreement so far are as follow.-,: The ordinary 'hours of work to be between 7.30 a.ni. and 5 p.m. on live days of the week, with one hour for lunch between 12 and 1 o'clock. On Saturdays work shall cease not later than 12 noon, and provision itmade for fifteen minutes "smoko." The rates for sheep and lambs, 'or sheep an:! lambs not otherwise specified, shall :>:- 30s per 100; double fleece sheep, 37s (id; rams and stags, other than ram lambs, Gd each; dea,d sheep or lambs, Is per head. Xo sheep or lambs to be dressed with long shanks, and no daggy sheep or lambs to be killed. The rates for cattle are to lie: Bullocks and cows, 2s Gd per head; hulls, 2s 6d, all bulls to be chopped and softsided, otherwise double rates to be paid. Calves up to 1001b, Is lid per head, over 1-OOlb and up to 2001b, 2s; over 2001b, at beef rates. Double rates are to be paid for all* "Kosher" stun". All dead cattle done at the works to be paid for at the rate of 7s Gd each.
The rates for killing pigs are: Up to 1001b, Is; up to 2001b, Is fid; over 2001b, at a rate of Is for every 1001b or fraction thereof. Provision is made for fifteen minutes' ••■smoko" at as nearly as possible 0.45 in the forenoon, and 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Overtime—Overtime shall be paid for at (lie rate of time and a half, and not more than one hour overtime per day to In' worked; no overtime to be worked on Saturdays, unless a public holiday occurs during the week, when overtime may be worked at the rate of time and a quarter.
"Waiting time" is also to be paid for. It is agreed that slaughtermen shall wait fifteen minutes in the event of a "cutout," but if required to wait longer they shall be paid at the rate of 3s per hour for all such time.
AN AGREEMENT AT MASTERTON.
Masterton, Last Night. As an outcome of the conference held yesterday between representatives of the Wellington Farmers' Meat Company and the Slaughtermen's Union, an agreement was arrived at by which the Waingawa works will remain open. The agreement will be for three years, and will probably be registered under the Arbitration'and Conciliation Act at a later date. The company has agreed to pay 30s per 100 for sheep and lamb«, and 2s Gd per head for beef cattle. The slaughtermen abandoned their demand in regard to learners, as the agreement provides for one learner in every ten, as at present. The whole of the remaining conditions are similar to those that were previously in existence, so far as the local company is concerned. The company will not take sheep from the clients of other companies.
