UNIVERSITY SENATE.

TITE CAPPING CEREMONY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Wednesday. The University Senate referred to the medical committee a motion that medical students be permitted to attend at either Christchurch, Wellington or Auckland hospitals -to acquire further clinical experience. It was resolved that, owing to the importance of massage in the treatment of certain diseases, the Senate would approve the Otago University's action in granting certificates in massage. The Senate was occupied largely today in discussing a resolution from the professional board of the Auckland College that in view of the interruptions at recent capping ceremonies, the chairman be instructed to ask the Chancellor to suspend the capping ceremony in Auckland for at least one year, together with a motion bv Professor Brown that diplomas won by students at each college be forwarded' to its authorities, and presentation left in its hands; that the Senate confer degrees. Professor Brown said that colleges were the disciplinary authorities of each centre, and should conduct the ceremony. It was not the function of a university to provide an entertainment where the public crowded to see people make fools of themselves. Mr. Von Haast seconded tlie motion. Dr. Fitchett could not support the motion. Tie wanted to organise the noise, though, with more tact and control. The Chancellor shook his head, but he diflered from the Chancellor. No i decision was arrived at.
