A DISASTROUS FIRE.
HEAVY LOSS. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright. Melbourne, .January 22. Flatman's timber yards at St. Kilda have been destroyed by fire. The outbreak originated in the joinery shop above the engine house, and spread with' extreme rapidity. The Fire Brigade was promptly on the scene of the conflagration, which was then two acres in extent. The brigade succeeded in saving the wooden houses which thickly surrounded the yards on all sides, though they were hampered by the intense heat. Thieves, oil the pretence of assisting the brigade, robbed a number of residences. The property was partially insured. One estimate gives the loss as £.50.000. and another as X" 120.000.
