Melbourne, January 21. In the Commonwealth, 24.020 mothers have claimed the £5 maternity bonus. Of these, 135 petitions were not allowed. PIGEON SHOOTING. Perth, January 21. A man was fined 10s for wounding a bird in a pigeon match. It fell out of bounds and was allowed to lie for fifteen minutes, the rules prohibiting the shooters picking up birds out of bounds. The decision was based on the around of the new Cruelty to Animals Act, which imposes penalties for ill-treating animals. In this case wounding constituted ill-treating.
