THE WAIHI STRIKE.

A CHABGE OF PERJURY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Waihi, Last Night. At the Magistrate's Court this afternoon Walter Edmund Harvey, on remand, was charged, on the information of Detective Sweeney, with committing perjury at the inquest touching the death of Evans, held on December 13, at Waihi, in that he swore on oath: (1) ,That he never carried a revolver in i New Zealand; (2) that he did not present a revolver at one of six persons at Karangahake on November 10; and (3) that he did not say on that occasion, "AH right, Bill, I've got you covered," or any words to that effect. Mr. Jackson represented the accused. Sergeant WoUmann briefly stated the circumstances of the case, and said that the charge was laid under section 13 of the Crimes Act. The first witness was the district coroner, Mr. W r . M. Wallnutt. He said that Harvey had given sworn evidence in keeping with the indictment, after being warned by Mr. J. R. Lundon, counsel for the relatives of the deceased, of the penalties which might be incurred by persons committing perjury. Several witnesses supported the statement as set forth in the indictment. Accused was committed to stand his trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court at Auckland, bail being allowed in a personal recognisance of £IOO and two sureties of £SO each.
