SLAUGHTERMEN'S STRIKE.

THE SITUATION IX AUCKLAND. By l'elegrapji —Press Association. Auckland, Tuesday. The slaughtermen's strike does not affect Southdown, although registration by the union has been cancelled. The men arc working under an award which does not expire until October. AT HASTINGS. Hastings, Tuesday. There are no further developments in connection with the slaughtermen's dispute. Work is proceeding as usual at Tomoana and Pakipaki freezing works, and no notice of the intention to cease work has yet been received by either. PROPOSED CONCILIATION. Christeburcb, Last Night. A meeting of the Sheep-owners' Union to night decided to write the chairman of the Freezing Company and the secretary of the Union asking that the matters in dispute be referred to the Conciliation Council or the Arbitration Court, both sides to abide by the decision, which is to be mjide retrospective. TEE POSITION AT WAITARA. It is current report that Messrs. Borthwick and Sons have given notice to the slaughtermen that the Waitara works will close down on Saturday next. The employee's notice was for the 30th, but the firm have chosen their own time. A statement is also being made quite openly, but whether correct or not is another matter, that if the proprietors can procure the services of ten butchers to man the boards they are prepared to carry on in spite of the slaughtermen's ultimatum. It is not necessary that the slaughtermen should be as 'expert as the present staff, but so long as they can kill and dress reasonably' it would suffice. Of course, this may be only j rumor, but it is given as the general talk of the town. Messrs. Borthwick are particularly well situated as regards handling meat into Home steamers, and probably could get through where others would fail. However, something definite will be known in the course of a fewdays.
