THE CASUAL DRUNK.
REFORMATIVE TREATMENT. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 21, 10.30 p.m. Sydney, January 21. A scheme of dealing with casual drunks, which has been operating for many years in America and for five year's in Victoria, has been introduced at the Central Police Court. The Rev. Mr. Hammond and a missioner converse with likely men in the courtyard, informing them that if they sign the pledge for not less than six months the Magistrate will be informed, and will probably not convict them. The signatories are visited at their own homes the same week, and a letter of encouragement is sent to them. The experience of Victoria shows that 25 per cent. lof the men sign, and of these 80 per cent, keep the pledge or are not heard of again.
