The progress of the fire on the Estonia was so rapid that the officers were unable to return to the bridge to order the engineers to stop the vessel. The third engineer was burned to death at his post. The captain and ten men were burnt or driven overboard. It was impossible to launch a boat while the vessel was travelling at a speed of nine knots. '
