THOSE PUBLIC CONVENIENCES.
BOROUGH COUNCIL PETITIONED. The vexed question of the proposed erection of public conveniences in Brougham street was again before the Borough Council, last night, when a petition bearing 130 signatures was presented by Cr. Morey, urging the Council to reconsider its decision to proceed with the work. The petitioners were of the opinion that to place it alongside the kerbing, within a few feet of the front of ratepayers' buildings, was an act of injustice to those ratepayers. Further, Brougham street was too valuable a street to be depreciated by the Council's action. They also considered the proposed site too public, and while the whereabouts of such a convenience should be generally known, its actual site should be as secluded as possible. They urged the Council to consider the necessity of economising as much as possible, so that the really urgent works of the borough could be proceeded with. They were strongly of the opinion that such a convenience as proposed, to be of any real and lasting value, must be well and, of necessity, expensively built. Seeing that caretakers were required, the capital and annual charges would be heavy, and they accordingly thought that some less expensive scheme should b<; adopted by the Council, if it considered such a convenience was a necessity the present time. In the opinion of the petitioners, the convenience of residents and of visitors to the town would be better served by fixing the site away from the centre of the town, where there were already one or two semi-public conveniences.
€r. Buxton moved that tlip matter be brought up at the next Council meeting. Or. Tlartnell seconded the motion, which was carried without opposition. Cr. Morev's notice of motion to rescind the previous decision of the Council to proceed with the work was also again held over.
