SPORTING.

TURF T 'PIC'S. (By "Mot!r>a."). The Mart on Jockey m.b's recent meeting proved a great success, there being a profit of £ISOO. The Foxton Racing Club'* annual meeting opens to-day and will be concluded to-morrow. Splendid acceptances ' are carded for the opending day. and racing should be interesting. The presence of a stipendiary steward should help to "straighten up'' things considerably. and given fine weather there should lie a good attendance. Proceedings will open at noon with the Hack Hurdles, for which eight horses have been paid up. Whimper has got in lightly, being only Dibs above Eiya. Considering that the last time the pair met Whimper gave Eiva 141bs and a heating, the owner of the lastnamed neddy appears to have a genuine grievance against the weight-adjuster. Kelp is a bold .jumper, but the distance may not be far enough to suit him. Serenity will make his debut as a hurdler, and is sure to carry a lot of money. The well-bred rogue has been jumping 1 well in his schooling tasks at Wanganui" j and the fences are not very difficult at ' Foxton. The others have "little to recommend them and Knutsford is alleged to he very backward. Whimper is likely to start a better favourite than Serenity.

A big crowd of speedy sprinters figure in the Electric Handicap, run over" sixfurlongs. Expect fills the role of honor, and is well alile to carry Ost. Of the others. Lady Louisa, Alecto, Heather, Eminent and Patronymic have won recently, and the performances of Patronymic and Heather have been particularly pleasing. Tt should be a fine race. The Foxton Cup is run over a mile and a quarter, and thirteen must be regarded as a good acceptance for the £2OO stake. Rill has been thoroughly woundup for the last month, and has been running consistently. She appears to be in a class of her own, but weight brings the best of them back to the ruck. Big things are expected of Manawakaha. The son of Cordon Rouge has been going along nicely, but would probably be all the better for a race or two. Bonnie Boy's Rangitikei form was good, but a' stone and a half extra in the saddle may alter the aspect of things. Ngatimarn- lias been much boomed' for this race, and it is reported that B. Deeley will steer the bay. TTe will have to show improved form to beat the top weights. Mescal is one of the most consistent horses on the coast, and is generally finishing faster than anything else over a mile. Midian won the race last year, and followers of Tilley's successful stable reckon the money will again go to Fordell. Of the light weights Montreal, Matlow, Royal Dragoon i and Muleteer have earned winning brackets this season. This should be a good betting race, and if- started Rill and (Mescal are likely 'to carry a lot of money.

"The Trial Stakes, five furlongs', wo] be contested by a big field. Much: depends on a start in these flutters, and if he "gets out" Yankee Doodle may be expected to run prominently. : .,.Mr. Albert Jackson has the horse very \vell, and his race fit Marton shows, him up as a really "good one."

The Awahou Welter hardly looks like a good handicap. Papamardama and Patronymic should run as well as any of the topweightfi, but it is hard to understand why Moirette. after running well at .New Plymouth and Stratford, should be thrown in at the minimum. She is biie of the unlucky ones in running, but with a stronger horseman up 9he may take a lot of beating. The most interesting race of the dav should be the Plying Handicap. With the exception of Thetis the ten acceptors have all shown good form at the New Year meetings. Should Mon Ami take it into licr head to gallop she might repeat her Bulls performances. TTermia and Lady Volga have been winning in their turn, and tlu r first-named is partial to a sandy course. The race looks very open.

The Dash Hack Handicap is one of those wretched four furlongs scrambles that are a blot on any programme except when two-year-olds are being catered for. Eminent won the race last year with 7.12 up and has won recently. Other quick beginners carded are .Her ton, Tree Lucerne and Yankee Doodle. ; It is a race well left alone. The curtain will be rung down on the day's racing with the ITerrington Welter, seven furlongs. Some smart performers are engaged, including Ivina, Coroipandel. The Rover and Xgatimaru. Coroniandel. who was troubled with rheumatism is now quite well again, and is expected to rim well. Conziska, says the Wairarapa scribe. "The Punter." will not be started at the Foxton meeting. Con the Shaughran was railed through to Wellington yesterday. The IJawera horse has been responsible for some stood gallops lately, arid may run well at Trentham. Taranaki nominations are simply>ma;nificent. .and a fitting testimonial to the popularity of the club and its energetic secretary! Good stakes and liberal advertising have resulted in record futures beinj hoisted. In the Taranaki 1 fun oualitv is represented! bv Undecided. ElcetrakofT. Sea Queen. Bvron, Cheddar and "Mendip. The open sprint events have drawn Ventura. Peroneal. Crown Pearl. Coldsize. Piriwai and other noted performers. The minor events have all filled splendidly, and Mr. Ceo. Morse will have his hands full to get his weights profiling points to a record meeting next pared by the end of the week. Everym on tli.
