FISHING FOR KINGFISH.

CAPITAL SPORT. Auckland, January 14. •'lt is the most exciting sport I have ever had, and I cannot speak too highly of it," said Mr. W. 11. Hazard to a reporter this morning. He was talking about taking kingfish with the rod up at the Bay of Islands, where he has just spent a holiday. Other sportsmen have found out doing the same thing, and there is .t small but growing band of deep-sea fishers whose annual leave is spent, as a matter of course, among the kingfish. Fishing for the hefty kingfish at any time is exciting enough, but the use of the rod makes his capture strenuously exciting. ■Mr. Hazard spoke most enthusiastically of the sport which his party had experienced at the bay. Ihere were a number of other Aucklanders up there, and they had all decided that it would be very difficult to find anything more exciting. An English sportsman who has fished in most waters where big fish are to be found considers that the sport is finer than the famous tarpon fishing oil the coast of California, where a season will cost the tourist anything up to £IOOO. One great recommendation of the kingfishing in -New Zealand is that it can be had at practically no expense. There are a number of spots on the East Coast where the fish abound—"acres of them," is Mr. Hazard's description.
