A grave digger, who was dismissed, has made a statement !<> the Health Department and the pre--, in which he alleged that it ha- been the practice for a year past to remove coffin- from giaves in order to permit fre-ii burial-. There was no room to replace Cue disinterred -hell- nor their giuc-ome contents, the re-nlt being that they were piled on one another on rubbish heap" and in some instance- burnt. On one occasion, in trying to find room for another coffin, a pick pierced the lid of a shell and was embedded in a skull. which it brought from the ci-kct. Dr. Sprot. reporting to the Hoard of Health, says lie has verified many of the grave digger's statement-, more particularly regarding the inability to replace coffins after a fresh burial, ann has no hesitation in saying that the method of disposing of the dead filled him with horror and amazement. It was a real danger to public health.
