Professor Baldwin Spencer, lecturing op. the Northern Territory, said that it contained, apart from aboriginals, less than 4000 people to an area of 423,000 square miles. There were only 340 whites at Darwin, while a few days' sail away were sma'il islands containing 37,000,000. Seeing these one had fears as to what 'might happen in the near future.
