There were 542 merchantmen, with a tonnage of 1.*170.<M!5 tons, being built in the United Kingdom on December 31, as compared with 4R3 vessels, with a tonnage of l.:>tiS.tJ7l tons, throughout the rest of the world. There is a great shortage of skilled labour in northern shipyards, causing the refusal of some orders.
