The death oceurred on Tuesday at Kaitoke of Mr. G. S. Phillips, a wellknown settler, aged 71 years. Mr. Frederick Butterworth continues to make good progress towards recovery, and has regained consciousness. At St. Barnabas Church, Opunake, on January 1, iss Helen eMarns Holmes, of Pihama, was married to Mr. Thomson, of Thames, Auckland. A London cablegram states that Lord Roberts, Lord Lansdowne, Lord Haldane and Mr. Rothschild have inaugurated a fund to establish a National .Memorial to Sir George White. At Waitara on Sunday, Mr. L. B. Grimstone, of the Bank of New Zealand, who is being transferred to Eltham, was presented by the Catholic community with a gold mounted prayer book. Mr. W. E. Jones, of the legal firm of j Messrs. Russell and Anthony, Christchurch, who hag been spending his holidays with his parents here, returned to Christchureh on Saturday morning. Mr. G. F. C. Campbell, on relinquishing the position of Commissioner of Taxes to take up the duties of Secretary to the Treasury, was the recipient of some valuable volumes of travel and military biographies from the officers of the Land ana Income Tax Department. The marriage of Mr. Walter William Massey, eldest son of the Prime Minister, and Miss Ruby Longuet, of Christchurch, took place in Christchurch on Tuesday. The Rev. 0. Fitzgerald offic- | iated. Prince Yamagata. 0.M., President of the Privy Council of .Japan, upon whom an unsuccessful attempt at assassination was recently -made, is 74 years of age, and has had a long and distinguished career in the service of Japan, both in the civil and military spheres. At the age of 32 he -became a junior Minister for War, and three years later was Minister for War. In 18S5 he became Minister for 'Home Affairs, and in 1892 Minister for Justice. He was appointed Chief of the. General Staff in the civil war of 1877, and commanded the first army in the China-Japan war. In 1889 he became Prime Minister, and next year attained the rank of general. In 1907 the title of prince was bestowed upon him.
