LABOR MATTERS.

THE AFTERNOON SHIFT. By Gable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, January 6. There is serious unrest among coalminers in the Maitland district on the question of the abolition of the afternoon shift, on which question they favor ignoring the advice of their leaders. The men have called an aggregate meeting to-day to discuss the matter. Though a strike is not anticipated, it is expected the men will adopt a resolution fixing a date on which to demand the abolition of the shift. The abolition of the second shift would mean that about half the miners would be thrown out of work, a state of affairs the men's leaders do not advocate.
