DISTRICT NEWS.
MOKAU. (From Our Own Correspondent). The New Year holidays passed very quietly here and at Awakino. The majority of the residents journeyed to Awakino to take part in a monster picnic organised by tho Awakino residents, but' about noon a steady rain set ill and lasted the whole of the afternoon, and the picnic had to be abandoned until some future 'time. In the evening a dance was held in the Awakino Hall, but owing to the inclemency of Wie weather very few turned up. Still, those that did venture out were rewarded with a fine evening's dancing.
The new contractor for the mail service from Waitara. to Awakino made a start from Awakino on New Year's morning. The coach passed through Mokau in good time, ami tho up-coach from Waitara passed through at 4.30 p.m. If this miming is kept up, the new service will be welcomed by the residents in the Mokau and Awakino districts, as they have been accustomed to tlic coach arriving here at any time between 0.30 p.m. and S p.m., and sometimes later.
