OBITUARY.
micitael McCarthy, aged ioi. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Gore. December 31. The death was announced this morning of Michael McCarthy, aged 101. lie was we'll known 011 the Otago goldfiekls for many years, and participated in the Tuapeka jubilee celebrations last year. He arrived in Tasmania in 1840 and came to New' Zealand in the early fifties. Subsequently lie proceeded, to the miners' rush at Dunbarton Rock, and later opened an hotel there, and subsequently he took a farm at Dunrobin, residing there for many years and rearing a large family. He 'came to Gore a few years ago, and remained here until his decease.
AN ADVENTUROUS CAREER. Captain John Watson, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of Port Chalmers, died on Tuesday afternoon. Deceased was* born in Scotland in 1834. 111 1848 he went as apprentice in 11 barque to Victor, in the Arctic regions. lie got his mate's certificate in 1 554 and made twelve voyages in that capacity in the Arctic. 'He was master of the barque Perseverance in ISSO. and was appointed ice master of tin; Dolphin (210 tons, 4 gmw) in the same year for a search for minerals in Greenland. The expedition was successful. Later lie went on further expeditions in the Arctic whaling, and was twice wrecked, once returning in o.pen boats till picked up by t'lie Emma, which had also been fast in the jce, and taken to England four months, later, and once living for many months with Eskimaux. Afterwards he entered the Australian service, and commanded several saiiling vessels to Australian ports. He came to New Zealand during the Maori war and commanded the barque Collingwood, which was sent to the Chatham Islands two weeks after the escape of Te Kooti. brought back IGO Maoris and landed 'them in Taranaki. A few years later he entered tlie pilot service at Tairoa Heads, and for 18 years was secretary of the Otago Dock Trust. He then retired. and t.wo years ago re-visited England, but since his return he had been ailing.
