SENSATIONAL TRAM ACCIDENT.
CARS RUN AWAY. FOURTEEN PASSENGERS INJURED. By Cable—Pre?* Association —Copyright. Received December 2D, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, December 2!). A tram smash caused a tremendous sensation in the centre of the city on Saturday afternoon. A car was mounting the hill in King street when the brakes failed. The car ran back, dashed across C'astleveagh and Pitt streets, and collided with a car behind near George street. The spectacle of a car running on.the wrong line furiously, some passengers looking anxiously out of the doors, others jumping off, and women screaming, attracted the attention of hundreds on the crowded streets, and when the runaway crossed street the crowd ran after it as though joining in a chase. Warning shouts enabled the driver of the car at the intersection of Pitt street to stop in time to avoid a right-angled collision. The runaway had its ironwork twisted badly and the woodwork smashed to splinters. The damage was so extensive that it is surprising that there were no fatalities. Fourteen passengers were taken to the hospital.
