Fifteen minutes after Mr. Taft passed through a street, bound for a ball, an explosion occurred in the Park opposite the chief hotel. It was believed that an attempt was made on Mr. Taft's life, but the explosion occurred prematurely. The Government explains that the explosion destroyed a new stand, but was not connected with Mr. Titft's visit. It was merely an incident of private ven«-cance .between two business rivals.
