TRADE WITH CANADA.

AUSTRALIA SHUT OUT. ,Bv Cable—Press Aesociatior.—Copyright. Sydney, December 27. The Herald, commenting on the increase of the trade of New Zealand with Canada, says it is due to the subsidy to the Vancouver mail service. The increase unfortunately is at the expense of Australia, whose exports are being gradually elbowed out of the trade, because she is unable to secure space for cargo and is handicapped by having to pay the full duty on shipments, while New Zealanders, under the reciprocity agreement, get a rebate. Australia desires, and as an Empire dominion ought to have, a far larger share of the Canadian market than she possesses. It is to be hoped (continues the Herald) that the projected visit of a Canadian trade embassy will be used by the Commonwealth Government to the fullest advantage. Australia has no desire to interfere with New Zealand enterprise devoted to New Zealand and its development, but it is plain that Australia at present is unduly shut out from Canadian communication and must come once more into effective touch with that lost zone of trade. Whether this is to be accomplished by means of a new and independent service remains for discussion by the Government.
