lie Seaside Improvement Committee applied for financial help towards the cost of running the picnic at Moturoa on New Year's Day, stating that' on account of t,] ie League having obtained subscriptions from townspeople for purposes akin to the Seaside Committee'g, the latter did not feel justified this year in soliciting public subscriptions as heretofore. It was pointed out that for tho last four years the Committee had run the picnic solely for the purpose of bringnig the country people into New Plymouth, and so advertising the town, and financial help from the League would help it to continue a work which had already been the means of popularising the seaside and establishing- a friendly feeling between the town and country. After considerable discussion, during which the question of merging the Severn] small bodies in the town, working which with the envelopes are being issued' raised, it was decided not to accede to the request, but to co-operate as far as possible with tho committee in their work. '
The chairman submitted the scale of charges for vehicles and motor cars plying for hire between the' town and the Mountain Hcuse. The scale had b?sx drawn up by the owners as the result of the joint representations of representatives of the League and the Mountain House Committee. The tariff, together with particulars of the routes of the attractions of the district, will be printed and placed in the local hotels, boardinghouses, and public places. Protest was made by several speaker* against the imposition of the Is a head toll upon visitors to the Mountain House. . Consideration of the question was deferred.
The secretary reported that there had been a brisk demand for the illustrated folders the League had printed. He had also been kept very busy replying to enquiries by letter and otherwise, for the same ends as the League was work in connection with which came in ' for much commendation, particularly the literary part, for which the Eev. J. W Burton was responsible), should be printed, and the Literary Committee was empowered to order further supplies if necessary. Ten thousand copies of each folder are being printed and distributed' throughout the Dominion and Australia.
Several applications were received for the position of secretary, rendered vacant by the retirement of Mr. Snowball, and that of Mr. A. F. Humphries was, after a great deal of discussion, aecept-
The appointment will entail changing the offices of the League to Messrs. McKellar and Stocker's premises in Currle street, where ample accommodation will be available. -It was decided to erect signboards at convenient points for the guidance of strangers to the office, and to provide a comfortable room for the convenience of those visiting "the town and soliciting information. For his offer to relieve the League of its obligations in regard to the lease of its present rooms, Mr. Claude Weston, .'■cting for the owners, was neart!'vthanked.
Eulogistie reference was made to the work of Mr. Snowball, the retiring secretary, who, it was agreed, had had to bear the brunt of the heavy initial work, and a committee was empowered- to fittingly recognise his services. Mr. Snowball feelingly acknowledged the compliment paid him and the help that had been given hi lii.throughout by members of the committee.
