THE AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL.

The annual N.Z. Axemen's Carnival at Eltham on Thursday and Friday of this week will no doubt again be the rendezvous of the masses of Taranaki holiday makers. Eltham easily holds pride of place with the carnival as tbe biggest draw in Taranaki, judging by the annual record of gate takings. Year by year as the entries have mounted up, so has tlie attendance, and if one may venture to prophesy on tbis basis, this week should furnish another record. Not only are the axemen's events rigbt up to previous records in the matter of entries, and the pre-eminent status of the contestants, but the cycling events have attracted the cream of the racing cyclists of the Dominion. Never be-' fore Lave so many racing stars nominated for any meeting in Taranaki, a circumstance accounted for to a large extent, no doubt, by the prominence given to cycling events by the Taranaki Circular Road Race Committee. Eltham has the best grass track in the province, and the cycle ra«es should be worth going a long way to witness. Very complete arrangements have again been made for the convenience of the public, and well managed luncheon and afternoon booths will again be a feature of the gathering. All manner of side-shows will as usual provide diversion for young and old, while picnicking facilities for parties and families are available on the shady banks of the-1 Wainongoro River skirting the park. To the thousands who are not interested in horse-racing, the Eltham Carnival offers one of the most enjoyable, and interesting outings in Xew Zealand, and with the special train arrangements made there is no doubt the enterprise of the Eltham people will again be fully rewarded.
