DROWNING FATALITY.
IN THE AWAKINO RIVER. (Special to the News.) Awakino, Last Night. A drowning fatality occurred here on Wednesday afternoon in the Awakino river, just below the township. A young man named George Dunn, a stranger to the district, lost' his life while attempting to ford the Awakino river. A horse was noticed on the bank opposite byMr. Carrington (a butcher) at about half-past three on the afternoon of the fatality, with the saddle slipped. It being quite a customary matter to see horses, in this locality, no notice was taken of the matter at the time. The horse, however, was still there in the morning, and the police at Mokau were communicated with. Constable Flannagan and some local residents proceeded to the spot and dragged the river, with the result that the body was discovered in the vicinity. It proved to be that of a young, man from 25 to 30 years of age. Among the paper?" in deceased's pocket were found some receipts from a storekeeper at Matiere, made out in favor of George Dunn. An inquest will be held at Mokau to-day.
