There was a great gathering at the funeral in London of George Rignold, the well-known actor, which formed (in impressive public tribute. * Mr. W. J. Geddis, of Napier, has been offered, and has accepted, the position of managing director of the New Zealand Times Company, Ltd. A London cablegram states that the United States assenting the warship Natal will sail with Mr. Whitelaw Reid's remains from Portsmouth .on Saturday. Lieut. I. T. Standish, R.N.Z.A., on his arrival from England, is to be appointed Adjutant of the Wellington Field Artillery Brigade with headquarters at Palincrston North.

A London cablegram says that the Hon. A. A. Kirkpatrick, South Australian Agent-General, has received many congratulations on the extension of his term of office.

A cablegram from London states that Sir George Reid ie starting to-morrow for a fortnight's holiday in Switzerland. Thence he will go to Vienna, Berlin and Paris in connection with the extension of Australian trade on the Continent. Intimation lias been received from the Rev. A. T. Bramsby of his acceptance of the call to the pastorate of the Wellington Baptist Church. Mr. Brainsby, who is at present pastor of the North Adelaide Baptist Church, is expected in Wellington early in the new year. At the West End School breaking-up ceremony yesterday Miss Fleming, who has been engaged as pupil teacher for some tiTne past was presented by the teachers with a very neat morocco-bound book on the occasion of her resigning from the service of the Taranaki Education Board. Mr. Gilbert, Chairman of the School Committee, in making the presentation, referred at some length to the good feeling that had always existed between' Miss Fleming and her co-workers and felt certain that they regretted very much that Miss Fleming was relinquishing the profession. (Applause). The Rev. Martin Anstey, 8.D., M.A., the secretary of tile London City Mission, reached Wellington on Wednesday by the Sydney steamer, and purposes to spenv! the next two or three months on a visit lo liiis lirother, the Hon. J. Anstey, M.L.C., of Tiiuaru. The Rev. Mr. Anstey is accmi panied by liis wife and daughters. The party travelled as far as Sydney bv the Orient liner Orama. They were nelconied at both Melbourne and Sydney by the Lord Mayors of those cities. Mr. Anstey is a well known Biblical scholar, a member of the Standing Committee of Convocation in the University of London, representing the faculty of Divinity. He lectures for Dr. G. Campbell Morgan at Westminister Chapel and is a vice-president of the Bible Teachers' Association. Tie had just completed a standard work on the chronology of the Old Testament which is to be published next autumn. There was a large gathering of representative citizens at the Club Hotel, at Waitara, last, night, when a public farewell was given to Mrs. A. J. Jury, who has relinquished the proprietorship of the hotel. The Mayor, Mr. W. F. Jenkins, presided, ami on behalf of thecitizens presented Mrs. Jury with a substantial silver-mounted dressing-case, ai(d u fat and comfortable Morocco writing case. The dressing case was inscribed with the brief but hearty inscription: "Presented to Mrs. Jury by her Waitara friends." Mr. J. George, in a happy little speech, expressed the opinion that the district was losing not only a good iiontess but "almost « mother" in the departure of Mrs. .Tiu'v. Mr. Herman T.ewis added a bright tribute to the proceedings, and with the confidence of her sex Mrs, Jury made her own response in an apt and feeling little speech. The inevitable toasting was marked by a spontaneity that added to the success of a singularly pleasing little function.
