EXPLOSION AT ADDINGTON WORKSHOPS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Cliristclmrch, Last Night. An enquiry is being demanded concerning an explosion at the Addington railway workshops on Saturday. A wor*, out steam hammer was being broken up into sizes convenient for smelting, and a charge of gelignite was used. Apparently in charge was too big for the explosion. hurled chunks of iron in all directions. NATIONAL MUTUAL LIFE ASSOCIATION. i Wellington, Last Night. Mr. Orton Stevens, manager of the National Mutual Life, has received the following cable from Melbourne: "The forty-third annual meeting was held today, and members are to be congratulated on' the splendid results for the year, which is a record one for the association. New business amounts to £'>,593,000, being £150,000 increase over last year. The total premiums were £954,000, showing an increase of £58,000. The interest received was £320,000, the rate of interest earned being higher than last year. Notwithstanding the large amount of new business, the expenses of management are lower than any previous year. The total funds now stand at £7,291,000.
