BUSH NURSING FUND.
j MEETING AT URUTI. Mr. W. Old occupied the chair at a meeting of the Uruti Nursing Fund. A | resolution of sympathy was passed to the widow of the late Mr. Dugald Mckellar. A statement as to the position of the Fund was then read. All accounts were paid, and the nurse's salary till March 1, and the credit balance in the bank was £SO. Thirty-three new subscribers had joined, and altogether there was a total of 70 members to the Fund. Reference was made to the very great difficulty the nurse found in getting accommodation, anl also the urgent need for a small room to be used as a ward' for very urgent surgical and medical cases. A doctor could motor easily up to Uruti in an hour and a-half from Xew Plymouth. In the winter-time, when bush accidents are most rife, it meant several hours of protracted agony to the patient to be taken in to the Xew Plymouth Hospital, and in very many of the bad cases medical aid was necessary. Mr. G. A. Jupp stated that he had | interviewed the secretary of the Hospital I Board (Mr. Lepper), and also Mr. HalI combe, the district's representative, and had received the promise of a grant of £25 towards the building. It was resolved that the district be canvassed to see if £4O could be raised. This would earn a Government subsidy ■ of 24s in the £, and with the grant of j £25 from the Hospital Board, would i be sufficient to erect a two-roomed coti tage. I It was agreed that if £4O be promised | in donations that the present Nursing ! Fund Committee proceed with the coti tage forthwith. ( The committee, consisting of Messrs 'W. Old (chairman), G. A. Jupp (treasurer), B. Wells and Mesdames Guscott and 11. Larsen (secretary) were authorised to receive donations. Mrs. Larsen said she hoped the ladies ef the district would make a special effort to secure the necessary money to build an additional room to the cottage for use as a ward. As secretary, so many cases came under her notice that were not fit to stand the extra thirty miles'' journey to New Plymouth. In the case of a sick child, too, brought into Uruti from a few miles back, such a place was a very urgent necessity, and ift the last few months quite a large number of children had been treated by the nurse. It was stated that a site would be very easily obtained for a cottage at Uruti.
