Mr. F. W.. Fagan and family, who have been on «i visit, to England." are due in Auckland by the Kent on Friday. A London cablegram reports tliat Sir George Eeid has recovered from liis indisposition, which was not serious. The Hon. Algernon Borthwick, the Rev. Robson, and Mr. R. Cruiekshank were passengers for Auckland by the Rarawa last night. Another old settler of Palmerston Korth has passed away, in the person of Mr. Andrew McDowall. Deceased was born at Petone in IS4I. Mr. T. P. Anderson of Messrs. Weston and Weston's office, lias received intimation that he has passed in four subjects of the law professional examination. A Paris cablegram says that M. Fallieres, the French President, gave an audience to Captain Amundsen, and decorated him with the Legion of Honor.

In the House of Commons Mr. Asquith paid a tribute to the late Mr. Wliitelaw Reid. The Governemnt is offering a battleship to oonvey his remains to the United States.

The death occurred at Devon port, Auckland, on Monday, of Mr. A. L. Hill, son of Sir. L. Hill, of Eltham, at the early age of 21 years. Typhoid fever was t'hc cause of death, Deceased had been farming in the Paeroa district Am old identity in the person of Mr. Michael Hamilton died at his residence, 105 Kelson street, Petone. on Saturday afternoon. Deceased, who was a very old and respected resident of the town, was born at Strathavmi, Scotland, in June, 1820.

Speaking to a Times representative, the Hon. .T. A. Millar, M.P. tor Dunedin West, said his health had greatly improved of late, and in the course of another month lie thought lie would be in the best of condition. Meanwhile he was taking a quiet rest. He anticipated that, all being well, he would take his seat again in Parliament next session. Mr. A. L. Beattie, Chief Mechanical Engineer in the Government Railawvs Department, will retire from the service as from 31st March next. Mr. Beattie, who is a native of Yorkshire and was trained at the railway foundry, Leeds, joined the I? ail way Department in Otago in 1870. and was later promoted to be locomotive manager of the Fox-ton-New Plymouth district. In 1885 he was made engineer and supervisor of railway workshops and after serving on the staff at Christchurch was promoted to his present position.
