Mumm's family objected to the intimacy, and influenced the son to break off the affair. Mumm, recognising the inevitableness of parting, informed Mrs. Barnes, whereupon she picked up a revolver and fired. The whereabouts of Mrs. Barnes is a mystery. It is reported that she fled to England.
