EKETAHUNA FALLS.
ABOUT THAT MAIL CONTRACT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Ekctahuna, Friday. At a special meeting of the Eketahuna Chamber of Commerce this morning it was resolved: "That this Chamber desires to record a most emphatic protest at the action of the few Pahiatua business and professional men at the meeting on Wednesday evening, as per the Press Association report yesterday, endeavoring to create an impression abroad that the Government was favoring Eketahuna, while the facts favored Pahiatua for the Pongaroa mail service. Such is absolutely contrary to fact, and a grave injustice to the Government. The statement that a few big land-owners on the Eketahuna-Pongaroa route had influenced the Government was absolutely unwarranted, and was supremely ridiculous. The Ekctahuna route would serve more small settlers and townships, and, when a short stretch of road was metalled, the route would be far superior to the Pahiatua one, and would offer greater facilities to Pongaroa and intermediate districts, as Pongaroa will get a close train connection and an earlier principal mail from Wellington. Pahittua acted without consulting Pongaroa, which, by a big majority, favored Eketahuna."
