Mv. ,1. ]). Mitchell, of Hawera, left for ' Auckland last night. Captain P. J. Carman, who has retired on supcrranuation as Departmental Inspector of Machinery, and who for several years has been inspector of machinery in Christchurch, was yesterday the recipient of presentations on behalf of Christchurch users of steam, and on behalf of his fellow officers in the department. Captain Marciel presented Captain Carman with a lounge chair and a purse of sovereigns on behalf of the users of steam; and Mr. R. Duncan, on behalf of the captain's fellow officers in the department, presented him with a gold watch, suitably inscribed, and for Mrs. Carman a jewel case. Eulogistic references to the tactful manner in which Captain Carman discharged his duties were made by Captain Marciel, Mr. John Anderson and others.
