ENTERTAINMENTS.

EMPIRE PICTURE PALACE. A strong selection of animated picture gems comprise the new programme to be shown at the Empire this afternoon and again to-night. There are two fine scenic pictures, "The Valley of Salzach" and •'Scenes in Korea." an interesting nature study entitled ''Crayfish," and the latest edition of the ever-popular "Gaumont Graphic.' The dramatic section is exceptionally entertaining, including "Broncho Billy's Bible" (S. and A.), "The Lake of Dreams' (Selig), "The Organ Grinder" (Kalem), and a fines' feature, "How Raffles Escaped From Prison." The comic pictures are a highly amusing quartette introducing "Tweedie Hercules," "Willie Becomes an Artist." "The Silent System," and "A Man Under the Bed."

THEATRE ROYAL PICTURES. The magnificent and brilliant programme presented at the Theatre Royal on Thursday and again last evening will be shown again at the matinee tills afternoon, and for the last occasion this evening at 8 p.m. "Martin C'huzzlewit" is indeed, a brilliant adaptation of this well-known Dickens story, and the Edison producers arc to be heartily congratulated on the splendid success of this great picture, and the local picture management for their pluck in securing such an expensive feature film considering the general apathy of the New Plymouth public in supporting anything in the way of an educational picture. °The film, which runs to the extent of 3000 feet in length, .i* divided into three I parts. The quaint Dickensian characters are admirably portrayed by a talented cast, the, familiar story being' told in a comprehensive and convincing way. The title role is ably sustained by Mr. William West, who has become a familiar and popular figure with habitues of the eilent drama, whilst the part of Mr. Pecksniff is cleverly rendered by Mr. Charles Ogle. Not alone in brilliancy is this film, as the Gaumont Company are represented on the programme with a long and quaint old costume comedy, introducing some of the most exquisitely beautiful coloring and woodland scenery that it is possible to imagine. Patrons would do well to note that this is the last night of showing.

JANSEN. Next Thursday, December 19, at the Theatre Royal, "The Great Jansen," supported by his new company, which has been specially organised for this tour, will appear for one night only. The tour through Australia has been a great success, large houses having greeted the company in Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, and Sydney. It is anticipated that the return season here will attract big attendances, and intending patrons are reminded that the box plan w at Collier's. As Jansen has other engagements to fulfil and his New Zealand tour can only be very brief, the season hero will positively be for one night only. Chief among the new artists supporting him arc Leslie A. Bates, eccentric comedian; Miss Addie Montague, Premier damseuse and soubrette; and Madame Leona in wonderful mind marvels. Miss Edna Herr undertakes to escape at the performance from a packing case supplied by Collier's Music Warehouse, and now on view at their store, after she has been securely nailed inside it.
