A PAHIATUA PROTEST. By Telegraph—Press Association. Pahiatua, Thursday. The first indignation meeting held against the Government since the Reform Party took office was held in Pahiatua last night. The meeting, which was largely attended, ws convened to protest against the action of the Government in letting the Pahiatua-Pon-garoa mail contract for one year only. The Minister, in giving his decision, stated that if the Pahiatua route was metalled in the meantime, he would reconsider the proposal to divert thePongaroa service to the Eketaluma route next year. Hitherto, the contract has been for throe years, A resolution was unanimously carried, strongly resenting the action of the Government in the matter. Strong remarks were made about the Government being influenced by a few big land-owners living on the Ekotahuna-Pongaroa route, at the expense of the many extra people occupying small holdings living on the Pahiatua route. It was claimed that the whole facts were in favor of the Pahiatua route.
