THE BRITISH NAVY.
" NEVER MORE ALERT, NEVER MORE READY." By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. 'Speaking at the New Zealand Club luncheoii to-day. Admiral Sir George King-Hall said the Royal Navy was never in a more perfect state of discipline than it is to-day. The devotion of officers and men to their duty was never greater. The Royal Navy was never more alert, never more ready for anything than it was to-day. There was no doubt the old Latin proverb was true to-day as ever: "If you wish for peace be prepared for war."
Admiral Ross, of the United States Navy, said that the Panama Canal would be open for the passage of ships by September next, and New Zealand should endeavor to have large coal stock at the Pacific Island ports, to reap the advantage of the Panama trade.
