Messrs. J. H. Parker, W. F. McAllum and 11. Ilaliwell (Ilawera) were passengers by the Rarawa for the North last evening. Mr. R. J, Harrison, who Ims been oa a visit to England, returned to Xew Plymouth yesterday.

The Mayor of Auckland has received information that Lord Liverpool will arrive in Auckland by the Malwa on December 18, and leave the same night for Wellington. s

The Hon. Mr. Allen gives an emphatic denial to the report that he abstained from speaking, on the defence question at Lawrence on account of medical advice that he must go slow, lie; declares he was never in better health, and says he has not seen any medico during his southern tour. The funeral of the late Father Costello, parish priest at Palmerston, who died suddenly 011 Saturday, was held yesterday. The cortege (states a Press Association wire) was over half a mile. Thirty priests from all parts of the Dominion were present, including the VicarGeneral (Dean O'Shea). There were many evidences of the high public respect in which the deceased was held.

Captain A. Duder, who is retiring from the position of harbormaster at Auckland after nineteen years' service, and I Mr. E. W. Burgess, traffic manager, whq is retiring after forty-two years' service, were the recipients of presentations from the Auckland Harbor Board's staff. Captain Duder was presented with a purse of sovereigns and an enlarged photograph of the American fleet at anchor in Auckland Harbor. Mr. Burgess also received a purse of sovereigns. At a largely attended meeting at Timaru last night Mr. das. Craigie, M.P., was presented with a handsome album, containing South Canterbury photos and drawings, and a cheque for £2OO in recognition of his splendid services to the borough during his ten years' occupancy of the Mayor's chair. A handsome gold bangle, set with diamonds, was also presented to Mrs. Craigie. Mr. Craigie, when the project was mooted, said he would devote any such gift of money to an art gallery, and this will be done. —Press Association.
